「情感的歷史」（History of emotions）是晚近二十年裡歷史研究學門中迅速蓬勃發展的新領域。有別於心理學或神經學等人類科學範疇，「情感的歷史」探究人類情感的歷史性。由於情感的歷史屬於當前較新的研究範疇，雖有學者如Peter Stearns and Carol Stearns, William Reddy, Barbara Rosenwein等史學家針對美國歷史、十八世紀歐洲歷史或者西歐中世紀時期進行情感的歷史意涵研究著書，至今 (2015)學界卻尚未有針對「情感的歷史」學派的緣起與理論發展完整介紹的入門書。本書作者Jan Plamper即在這樣的時間點上發表第一本系統性地介紹「情感的歷史」學派的專書。作者以二十世紀以來情感研究主要的兩派學說為起點，討論社會建構論學派（social constructivist）以及普世主義學派(universalist)兩派學說影響下，自十九世紀末以來各家學者對於情感歷史性的主張。社會建構論學派認為情感是經學習經驗而來，容易受到社會或者環境影響，因此在人類情感的表達隨時代變遷可以見得情感的歷史軌跡;普世主義學派則認為人類情感反應在不同文化以及不同時間的洪流中是普遍一致的，情感的表達並不會因時因地而變。本書跨越傳統歷史研究兩派學說，由人類學、哲學、社會學、語言學、歷史與政治學以及生命科學等層面介紹情感議題在人類活動與文明發展中的相互關係，導引當前「情感的歷史」研究者入門。

關於作者：
Jan Plamper 教授目前任教於倫敦大學金匠學院歷史系。曾於德國杜賓根大學任教，後於2008至2012年期間擔任德國麥斯白朗克人類發展研究機構「情感的歷史」研究中心(The Center for the History of Emotions, Max PlanckInstitute for Human Development)研究學者。著有The Stalin Cult: A Study in the Alchemy of Power (2012). 並與Benjamin Lazier共同編輯了Fear: Across the Disciplines (2012)；以及Marc Elie and Schamma Schahadat 合編 Rossiiskaia imperiia chuvstv: Podkhody k kul'turnoi istorii emotsii [In the Realm of Russian Feelings: Approaches to the Cultural History of Emotions] (2010)等著作。
