    本書是研究西歐中世紀時期「記憶」的重要著作。作者Mary Carruthers說明自古典時期晚期以降至中世紀時期的修辭學傳統，比如古典時期知識份子的學習法，指出「記憶」與道德操守緊密相繫的關係。古典時期一個記憶力強的人一定同時是一位具有高道德操守的人，因此兼具良好記憶力以及邏輯能力的知識份子往往被視為修養好且誠信之人。作者由此進而探究中世紀時期如神學家或者修士等知識份子對於「記憶」的看法。相較於現代文明中「記憶」往往重視文件資料的保存或引證，作者說明由於中世紀時期紙張或者羊皮紙取得不易，因此對於知識的保留方式必須經由「記憶」（背誦）體現。記憶/背誦著重於實際操作可經由反覆練習得來，因此它不但被視為是一門學術（ars memoria），更是一種教學法，可透過辯證、修辭等技巧調和知識份子的心性，磨練其心志與德行。本書雖研究中世紀時期知識份子的記憶之術，內容卻可呼應現今社會流行的「記憶術」訓練，因此也提供當今一般讀者由歷史與文學訓練角度省思「記憶」保留或記憶存取的議題。

關於作者：
Mary J. Carruthers教授為美國紐約大學英文系退休教授，著有數部具影響性的學術著作，如The Experience of Beauty in the Middle Ages (2013), "Virtue, intention and the mind’s eye in Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde." In C. Brewer and B.
