關於「貧窮」或「窮人」等相關議題的研究,學者向來由貧窮的視角探討「佈施」與「紓困」的社會福利及經濟活動。晚近許多研究比較著重發掘文本與歷史文獻中關於「貧窮」的普世經驗以及「貧窮」與個別社會之間的特定相互關係。本書著重貧窮經驗與個別社會關係,將研究視角聚焦於「佈施」。探討「佈施」的概念與實踐,以及佈施對於社群之間及個人身心靈層面上的影響力。本書收錄之論文主要探討宗教信仰與民間習俗如何影響紓困窮人的行為。相同的信仰之下,隨著時間的演變像是佈施這樣的行為是否亦隨之改變?本書收錄十二篇論文,由精神、知性、情感、個人、社會網絡、文化以及物質等層面,以多元的方法論探究西歐十三世紀至十七世紀時期不同地區(如英法等地)、不同信仰、教派(如天主教與喀爾文教派)如何看待「佈施」與「貧窮」之間的關係。
 
關於編者:
Anne M. Scott 目前為任教於澳洲西澳洲大學英文與文化研究學系之榮譽研究員,同時亦為澳洲與紐西蘭中世紀與西歐前期研究期刊Parergon 主編輯。著有'Piers Plowman' and the Poor (Dublin: Four Court, 2004),亦編輯Experiences of Poverty in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and France (Farnham: Ashgate, 2012)等書。
