與西歐中世紀時期的文化和歷史相關的議題許久以來持續引發文學與藝術創作者源源不絕的靈感，例如小說、電影、電視劇、劇場表演等藝文創作便常以西歐中世紀為時代背景，以現代的手法再現/想像當時候的風貌。近來，傳統中世紀研究學者興起一股研究「再現中世紀」的後中世紀研究（postmedievalism）的風潮，深入探討如十七世紀西班牙作品《唐吉柯德》、英國維多利亞時期劇場，到現代電視創作中《巨蟒戲團荒誕劇》(Monty Python) 改寫或嘲諷中世紀元素等議題的歷史意義。這些再現中世紀文化創作中的「幽默感」或而「諧擬」、「嘲弄」中世紀時期元素以娛樂觀眾，或而引發當代觀眾與讀者會心一笑的共鳴。以後中世紀研究方法論為基調，Louise D’Arcens著重分析西歐中世紀時期以降的作品，如嘲諷文類、笑話、機智文類以及低俗文本等，以及現代電影與劇場藝術。Louise D’Arcens主要探討這些後來的作品如何運用中世紀時期文化與文學傳統，達到引起讀者的「笑」和「幽默感」。同時，這些「後中世紀」文本中關於「笑」或者「嘲笑中世紀時期」的態度與時並進，不斷修正，因此可反應出情感（例如「笑」）的歷史性。
 
關於作者：
Louise D'Arcens 目前任教於澳洲臥龍崗大學（University of Wollongong）英文系，亦擔任澳洲國家研究中心（Australian Research Council）研究員。專攻於後中世紀研究以及西歐中世紀女性研究。著有Laughing at the Middle Ages: Comic Medievalism (Boydell and Brewer, 2014), The Cambridge Companion to Medievalism, ed.
