過去幾世紀以來，古典文學中的女主角(簡稱經典女要角)在文學與藝術中逐漸被受重視。但是這些女性要角到底是誰？從何處來？她們對於後代的影響力為何？女性英雄主義是如何被建構？與男性英雄主義差別為何？女性建構男性想像的程度為何，以導致男性亟欲控制女人而非讚揚女性的優點？身為悲劇中的主角，女要角常犯了令人髮指的罪刑，她們是謀殺者亦是自殺者。歷經磨難，她們達到了英雄般的高度。這些女性有女王、城市建立者、典範母親、人妻與寡婦、女戰士與女賢人。就如歷史所指，以《米蒂雅》、《伊雷特拉》、《安提岡妮》為型的經典女要角至今仍以戲劇的轉變出現在現代中，展現女性力量。這個議題旨在探討這些女性的角色及後續的生命。

For centuries the classical heroine has featured prominently in literature and art, but who exactly was she, where did she come from and what was her significance for subsequent generations? What did female heroism consist of, and how did it differ from that of the male? To what extent is she a construct of the male imagination, which seeks to control rather than celebrate female virtues? As protagonists of tragedies, heroines commit terrible crimes, are murderesses and suicides, and reach heroic stature through suffering: they are also queens, city foundresses, exemplary mothers, wives and widows, warriors and women of wisdom. As this past year has shown, the classical heroine in the form of Medea, Electra and Antigone demonstrates just how much power she continues to exert today in her theatrical transformations. This one-day colloquium explores some of these heroines and their afterlives.
