Ｍichael P. Branch所編輯的Reading the Roots: American Nature Writing Before Walden在2004年出版，其中收錄十八世紀及之前有關美洲的大自然書寫。專書由時間的順序編排，內容從哥倫布的“First Voyage and the Narrative of the Third Voyage” (1492-1493, 1498-1500) 、Jean Ribaut的“The Whole and True Discovery of Terra Florida” (1563)、Thomas Harriot的“A Brief and true Report of the Newfound Land of Virginia” (1588)、Johnathan Edwards所著“The Spider Letter”及“Beauty of the World”。 誠如編輯Branch所說，這些作者發現了奇妙的自然景象、自然中的野性美，意即從自然界的鳥獸蟲魚和花草樹木中發現未被人為劫掠的美感。然而，何謂自然書寫?Branch認為，這個小文類不僅是書寫自然中的事物，更可包括作者對自然的哲學觀和價值觀。從這些價值觀裡，我們得以捕捉國家認同、文化策略以及人們和自然之間的關係。Branch所收錄的都是從歐陸來到美洲大陸殖民者的書寫，他們對大自然的觀察、流連與抗拒、排斥都反應出他們在不同環境下的抉擇和認同。至於Recent Themes in Early American History: Historians in Conversation的編輯是Donald A.
