A.   簡介 Introduction (within 500 words, Chinese or English) 

城市研究在社會學的領域絕對不是一個新興議題，但是隨著古物的發現，愈來愈多研究文藝復興時代的學者希望探索城市主題的奧秘。社會學領域的芝加哥學派向來以研究人在都市經驗為主，並且有human ecology 的相關理論；然而，因為列斐伏爾（Henri Lefebvre)、思麥爾(Georg Simmel)理論的觸角，城市主題容易和許多生活經驗相結合，因此，城市所涉及的經濟流動、性別、階級、文化生產等都包括在這十年來文藝復興研究的範圍中。誠如Mark Gottdiener, Leslie Budd 所說，城市是個人們密集居住而相異文化交錯的有界空間，然每個世代在此的政治運作卻截然不同。以文化而論，城市必然和鄉村有著不同的差異；如果城市主導了文明的發展，在一定的期程裡，它也必然走向消蝕與再生。
 
Elisabeth Hodges在其專書Urban Poetics in the French Renaissance，討論了都市空間詩學幾個重要的議題，例如文藝復興時期法國如何想像都市、開展都市意識，其中，Maurice Scève 所書寫的里昂，Michel Eyquem de Montaigne所書寫的城市景觀都在其列。John Twyning也在專書London Dispossessed: Literature and Social Space in the Early Modern City中討論倫敦與商業的衝擊和十七世紀文學與社會中的都市危機、社會經濟、娼妓與服飾文化。誠如Jonathan White 所說，“Cities have been locations of human encounter …. Different Cities in a variety of cultures continue reproduce a series of familiar “common places, each site a shared memory.” (“Introduction,” The City and Ocean 1)。因此，研究文學裡的城市，不僅可以切入經濟、社會和大眾文化的議題，還可以藉由單一事件觀看城市的運作和文化的融合與衝擊。
